Effect of Pneumococcus Autolysate Antitoxin on Pneumococcus Pneumonia in Guinea Pigs
نویسندگان
چکیده
1. In rabbits, guinea pigs, and mice pneumococcus autolysate antitoxin has no effect against generalized infection by the pneumococcus. 2. In a large proportion of cases of pneumonia and sepsis caused by the intratracheal inoculation of large amounts of living pneumococci in normal or sensitized guinea pigs, autolysate antitoxin saves the animal. 3. The autolysate antitoxin is protective in most cases of pneumonia and sepsis caused by the intratracheal inoculation of small amounts of living pneumococci combined with sublethal doses of staphylococcus toxin. 4. These experiments indicate that in pneumococcus pneumonia of guinea pigs the autolysate toxin or toxins are elaborated only in the lungs.

Effect of Anaerobically Prepared Pneumococcus Autolysate Toxin on Mice and Evaluation of Pneumococcus Autolysate Antitoxin in Mice
1. Certain anaerobically produced autolysates of pneumococcus injected intravenously kill mice in 0.1 to 0.2 cc. quantities in a few hours to 8 days. 2. The symptoms of mice inoculated with these autolysates are weakness and increasing prostration until death. Massive albuminuria is found, appearing 18 hours after injection. During the course of a prolonged intoxication ascites and edema of the...

1. Anti-pneumotoxic sera prepared in rabbits or horses by immunization with sterile filtrates of the pneumotoxin, under certain conditions protect against the pneumonia caused by the intratracheal injections of mixtures of living pneumococci and toxic autolysates. 2. The protection against the development of pneumonia is heterologous, at least as regards Type I, Type II, viz.: an anti-autolysat...
متن کاملImmunological Studies in Pneumonia
The serum derived from human cases of pneumonia has been used to sensitize guinea pigs passively. As antigen an autolysate of a pneumococcus culture was employed. By means of Dale's method it has been possible to show with considerable regularity that the blood contains sensitizing antibodies during the course of pneumonia, but none after the crisis. Patients suffering from other diseases have ...
متن کاملHost Factors in the Pathogenesis of Pneumococcus Pneumonia
The present study was undertaken in order to determine whether animals exhibiting cutaneous hypersensitiveness to pneumococcus would show an acute inflammatory reaction in the lungs when pneumococcus autolysate was brought into contact with the pulmonary tissues and, if so, whether the pulmonary reaction might be shown to be due to the allergic state of the animal, rather than to intrinsic prop...
متن کاملAnaphylaxis with the Type-specific Carbohydrates of Pneumococcus
1. The type-specific carbohydrates (haptens) of Pneumococcus Types I, II and III, when isolated in protein-free form, are devoid of the property of inducing active anaphylactic sensitization in guinea pigs. 2. The bacterial carbohydrates of Pneumococcus, of which the Type II and Type III substances are nitrogen-free, produce rapid and fatal anaphylactic shock in guinea pigs passively sensitized...
